~ What I like about family photographs, is that they capture a moment that's gone forever, impossible to reproduce. ~ Karl Lagerfeld

Life is full of lots of phases and stages.  Some of those phases are joyful and rewarding, and others are painfully hard.  No matter what your family is experiencing right now, your story is worth telling.  I might not tell your story with words, but I’d love to help you tell it with images. I love lifestyle photography and family portraits that capture that special unique spark of love and connection. To help you document your family’s life as it is now, I offer on location natural light family photography in Chicago area, and surrounding suburbs. The session can also take place outside or inside your home, however, I always prefer to shoot in natural light. I would be lying if I said family photos are never stressful, but with right preparation they can be fun and entertaining. Here are a few suggestions that have worked great for my clients to prepare for the family photo session, and I hope they will help you as well.

- Love: your love for your family is probably the reason you wanted family photos taken! After all, it’s not about what clothes you wore, or what location you chose, or how much you weighed. It’s about capturing what life is like right now. It’s about playing, snuggling, tickling, and having good time. It’s about showing your children how much you love them so that they have these memories down the road.

- Outfits: have your clothing chosen way in advance and make sure that your outfit choices are comfortable and attractive. Choose coordinating colors (but not matchy, matchy) with bold accent colors, such as hues of gray with yellow or bright red accents.  Adding fun accessories like scarves, headbands, hats can add a modern twist and sassy flair to your images.

- Simplicity: in my opinion, best photos happen spontaneously. Lets work on the fun and spunky side of your family, so try not to do too many outfit changes (dads and kids don’t like that), too many locations or props.

- Timing: plan to arrive earlier to the location to allow enough time to park, make last minute clothing adjustment or eat a healthy snack. When a family shows up to a family photo session rushed and disorganized, it sets the tone for a rushed and disorganized session. Also, time that has been chosen for your session is very specific for lighting reason.

- Positivity: the best photographs are often the ones where everyone is engaged or interacting with each other. Please don’t get mad at your kids if they’re “not behaving.” The best thing you can do is be positive and let me interact with them naturally. Kids can pick up on their parents’ stress levels, so laugh it off, joke, giggle, kiss, play and engage with them.

- Snacks and naps: well-rested and well-fed kids are happiest. I meet lots of families who come to a photo session with dinner scheduled at the end. In this case, be sure to give everyone (including dad) a healthy snack before.
